So Simple A Monkey Could Do It
by lbgregg on Mar.18, 2009, under Author Posts
Hello, my name is Lisabea, and I am a blogger.
For those of you who don’t know this already, LB Gregg is a pen name for another pen name, (Lisabea or LBea), blogging gal from over at Nose In A Book. Yes, that means some of y’all would like to strangle me, or throw tomatoes at me, but, I am who I am.
I started writing through blogging. At first I was a lurker, too intimidated to type “hello” (it’s true!!), then as I grew more bold, I became a commenter, and finally, with so very much to say all the friggin time, I started my own digs. Things got a bit out of hand ::cough:: and not only did the blog gain some reasonable success, I made a heaping load of friends who were gobs of fun, smart, and supportive.
Blogging. It’s hobby. It’s a passion. It’s an addiction. It’s an em-effing compulsion.
And it’s totally fun.
About 8 months ago, my friend Sarah (Rain on the Roof) sent me this link.

LOOK! For those of you who are tentative about posting, or are intimidated by the process, it’s a very easy, liberating, creative way to express yourself. Here’s a great list to follow for success.
What I love about these ridiculous instructions is that it takes what we do intuitively and it simplifies the process. For a while, I had this taped to my computer. No Kidding.
For those of you who know my blog, “try not to be a dick” is pretty high on my list of what people should to strive to do. I can be an ass (often, and loudly) but I’m not a dick and neither are my friends. We’re obsessive readers, we enjoy talking to each other, we hope for clarity, and everyday, we get better.
S’all good. Easy peasy, this blogging thing.
Last spring, my pals encouraged me to start writing romances.
I’m sure that there are plenty of folks who would state I should have kept to blogging, but it seemed to me that writing m/m romance was a natural progression–instead of talking about books and blabbing with my pals (still fun!), I thought I’d write books for my pals to blab about. It worked out, sorta.
Writing. Let me assure you all that there is NOTHING I find easy about this process. Good God. No.
Any way, one morning a few weeks back, I checked my email (as I do every morning, multiple times, per hour) and a pal had sent me this link. OK maybe you’re not a link clicker (I’m not, either), so I’ll just post the content here:
HOW TO REALLY WRITE! (LBea: At last! All shall be revealed!)
Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
- pen and paper
- or your computer (LBea: Ok!)
Get your thoughts together.
Think about what you are going to write. (CHECK! Wow! This is simple. Who knew?)
First put your thoughts down and then.
Write what ever it may by down on paper or in your computer. (k… uh…isn’t there more?)
Be creative, make it sound like you.
Be detailed, give lots of information.
So simple a monkey could do it.
Not so fast, fellow readers, because the indefinable things missing from this in depth How To are many. Talent, perseverance, a grasp of the literary process, determination, blood, sweat, and tears. Heart. Chutzpah. Fear. Fearlessness. Patience. Obsession. Discipline. Fortitude. A willingness to eat ramen noodles. And a thick, thick skin.
There’s a huge difference to me in putting oneself ‘out there’ as a blogger (yes there’s ridicule and idiocy) and putting oneself out there as an author. Holy Macaroni, it’s a huge leap into the abys of trust and faith and hope and shame. It’s just…invigorating. An adreline rush for the couch potato.
And while it ain’t easy (even though it looks it) it’s a hell of a ride, and I’d do it all over again. Oh. Wait. I am!

Great post LB. It is really daunting to comment when you first start reading a blog. I spent 3 years as a lurker before I started commenting anywhere.
I’m interested to know how you’ve found the transition from blogger to author. Has it felt awkward or embarrassing? Have you just seen it as an opportunity to publicise yourself as much as possible? Or have you wanted there to be a strict separation between LB the blogger and LB Gregg the author?

Great post, LB. Very informative about the process you went through–are going through? LOL!

LB, thanks for this! It’s a great affirmation of what many of us shy people feel when online. It’s funny that in person, I’ll talk a stranger’s head off, but I don’t know what to say to a stranger online.
I like the explanation of the writing process, especially the pic with the stacks of ideas – so true! But most importantly, I appreciate the reminder that though we’re anonymous online (mostly), we should still refrain from dickery.

Hi Jenre~ My initial intention was to keep these identities separate, mostly for personal reasons (kids, husband, job) but I’m such a spaz I found that A) I couldn’t keep this secret and B) I kept signing in as the wrong identity and posted comments. It’s too much effort. Also C) It seemed like the right thing to do, awkward or not.
But, yes, it is a bit embarrassing. Most definitely, particularly when I’m interviewed or I participate with my favorite authors as a newbie. Especially if I’ve reviewed a book unfavorably ::squirm:: It’s daunting. However, I can rarely keep my trap shut (as you know) so I bully on up to the bar and do my thing.
Publicizing. My blogging pals really outdid themselves with their support. I feel very fortunate and I’m appreciative. Mwah.

Elisa~I think that list could be used for everything we do in life: Find your passion and work hard at it without being a dick. Hm. Need to boil that down to put on a t-shirt.

I was a lurker for the longest time and then thought, why not make myself known. From that it has snowballed into something bigger and better. From blogging I have gained the confidence to write and from that, hopefully, others won’t think my writing sucks.
Now I can’t shut up!
LB, you are my hero.

Katiebabs~I wish you all the success in the world. You deserve it: you’re hard working and kind, smart and still the sweetest girl in bloglandia. =)
Plus you’re a leeeeetle bit dirty. Yum.

Thanks for the interesting glimpse into the transition from reader to lurker to blogger to author! While I think my similar journey on this process ends at “blogger,” I really enjoy seeing you go to that next step. And doing it so well, too!

Renee~Nice icon thingy. Sexy! And thank you…I’m definitely flying without a net and it’s tricky. Hey, your blog is doing pretty well there, lady! Lots of great books, great insights, and what a grand give away.

That settles it: I’m hiring a monkey to blog for me.

I see you are not telling us about the weeks of research on those nasty web sites you had to slog through or the hours and hours of porn flicks you had to watch.

Neat blog post, LisaBea.
I am a total doofus when it comes to connecting the dots.
I came to writing through fanfic. Blogging was still in the future when I wrote my first Antonio Banderas slash for Zorro and Captain Love. :~D

Thanks Ally! Back atcha.MWah!
Jeanne~And I still haven’t really discovered slash and fanfic! I need to do that! Heh. Love Zorro, but love Antonio even more.
