What if the wrong guy, turns out to be the right guy for you? Caesar Serrano thought he screwed up when he landed in the bed of LAPD Officer Nathan Reilly. But when Caesar breaks into the wrong house and stumbles upon a heinous crime, implicating a high ranking LAPD officer, Nate is the only person he knows to turn to. The resulting investigation throws the Blue Brigade into panic. Now he’s running for his life and Nate is his only hope for survival. Can two men, on opposite sides of the law, come together to bring a monster to justice?
***********************
Nate stood adrift in the barren yard. He should just walk away. He’d pissed the guy off and that was that. But there was no way he was going to leave it there. At the very least he was going to apologize properly. He’d rather get a phone number and a date, but he’d live with not leaving things completely fucked up. Hell, if Caesar had treated Nate, the way Nate had treated Caesar, he’d be pretty damn mad, too. Swallowing his pride, he turned the knob and stepped in.
The door opened onto the scent of sawdust and oil. A yellow light hung from the rafters, throwing shadows into the corners. Lathe, table saw, jig, Nate hadn’t seen half those tools since high school woodworking class.
Caesar settled onto a stool as he grabbed a piece of sandpaper and a bit of wood. The little dog darted between Nate’s legs and crawled onto a pillow under the work bench. It looked like Caesar spent a lot of time in his little shop. Nate shut the door, crossed his arms and leaned against the frame. “Look, I’m sorry.”
“For what?” Caesar didn’t look at him.
Damn, the man was going to make this hard. “For being an ass. That was shitty, the way I treated you Sunday morning. I’d be pissed, too. I wasn’t feeling good and, fuck, I haven’t had anyone over in ages. It really freaked me out, but I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.” Caesar just kept sanding the surface of the wood. Shit, shit, shit. “Aren’t you going to say anything?” (continue reading…)

Blundering his way forward in his relationship with Nevada Agent Nick O’Malley, Riverside Detective Brandon Carr brings his daughter, Shayna, to Las Vegas to meet Nick. Nick has his own reasons for pushing Brandon toward a deeper commitment. But when the unthinkable happens, what every cop knows ends in tragedy, can Brandon hold it together long enough to solve the crime? As Brandon spirals into the hell of being a cop and a distraught parent will his love of Nick, and Nick’s love for him, be enough to see them through? It’s all or nothing and they can’t afford to lose.
*******************
Chapter 1
Nick eyed the baby-blue, slope-hooded, four-wheeled box taking up the end of his driveway with unbridled suspicion. Drawling out, “What the fuck is that?” as he glared at Brandon, Nick looped one arm across his chest and cocked his hip.
He”d told Brandon just to come over and let himself in with his key when he hit town’the key Nick had made for Brandon back in October. Still, Nick expected to hit home and find the Harley parked out front, not a blue minivan.
Between the vehicle and a pile of luggage, Nick’s driveway bordered on impassible. Nick parked his Kawasaki on the lip of the cement, by the back bumper. Just as soon as Brandon’s luggage got stowed, the bike went into the garage. No way was he leaving his bike out all night. Especially not in Vegas. Especially not in Vegas in December; not with the cold wind carrying the hint of rain in its touch. A winter thundershower and the bike would be toast. If no one stole it. Nick didn’t live in the best part of town.
Brandon snagged a duffle from the rear seat, stepped back and slid the door shut. “What?” he mumbled as he turned.
Pointing, like it wasn’t the huge, hulking and completely obvious monstrosity that it was, Nick hissed. “The thing in my driveway.” Although, scarily enough, the van fit the neighborhood quite well: one time suburbia sliding into inner city disrepair. (continue reading…)

I used to go to surfin’ at Torquay or Jan Juc or Bell’s Beach with my flatmate. To tell the truth, Gazza was more than my flatmate. I was in love with him. He wasn’t in love with me though. Oh, he liked havin’ me around. And when he didn’t have a girlfriend over he was happy enough to have sex with me. Sometimes when he did he’d even mutter my name as he emptied himself into me. But when he’d picked up some chick at a bar he wouldn’t even talk to me when he got home with her. Too afraid of what his women would think about his “flatmate,” I reckon. (continue reading…)
Dear Santa, Sir
by James Buchanan on Dec.15, 2009, under Author Posts
I know I haven’t been a particularly good boi this year, but I haven’t been a complete asshole either. So, on the theory that only those who ask get, I have a small Christmas list.
I was wondering if you could cram a couple of more hours into the day. Between the Evil-Day-Job, the Spawn, eating, sleeping, Dommeing…I really need a few more hours to fit writing in. Yeah, I’d be trimmer if I cut out the eating part, but then I’d pass out while roaring down the 101, flip the bike and it just wouldn’t be pretty.
Do you think the elves could develop plot bunny birth control? I’d like to finish one project before a dozen ideas for other’s are born. It’s not so much that I mind the overabundance of story lines, it’s just that they tend to mature and hop off somewhere else to find their destiny as card-sharks or pole-dancers before I can catch them.
Intravenous Caffeine. You of all people have to understand the glory of the concept. If you can’t add any time to the day at least I could be hyper and amped at later, or earlier, hours.
Maybe you could manage for all the ultra conservatives to wake up on Christmas morning with the sudden realization that if they put all the energy they use fighting against things like Marriage For All, Inclusive Hate Crime Bills, repeal of exclusion of GLBT in the military and expansive Reproductive Health and Sex Education, into say solving world hunger….shit, can you imagine what they could accomplish? That’s probably pushing it huh?
Alright, well, then maybe Santa, you might manage to get a few people to just make another person’s day a little brighter with a smile, or by opening a door, or just telling the poor wage-slave behind the Micky-Ds counter, “thanks.” If we could start there, I’d be happy.
That’s about it. Don’t bust the elves too hard and maybe get the reindeer a new whip, ‘cause we all know they like that crack across their rumps. Take care,
Love
James

Chapter One
Desert heat sucked the sweat from Special Agent Chase Nozick’s pores. “Give it up, Garcia!” he yelled. Somehow, he’d managed to shrug into the soft body armor as he slid out the car. Sweat pooled under the vest, plastering his suit jacket, dress shirt and tie to his skin. Damn, it was hot. Chase snorted as he leaned over the hood of his Bureau-issued car. The last thing he really needed to care about was how hot it was.
He aimed his 9mm at the driver’s side window of a pinned Escalade and yelled again, “I mean now!”
Chase never felt calmer. The situation flew by in sharp focus. He smelled oil burning off his Buick’s engine. The pop and hiss of the SUV’s radiator puking over the trunk of the Buick stung his ears. In his peripheral vision, Chase watched Jason crab-walk around the back of the SUV. Sand shifted under the feet of Chase’s partner, Jason Olhms, each grating grain distinguishable from another. Overlaid across it was Garcia’s cursing as he fought with his seatbelt. The impact from Chase’s car must have jammed it when he reversed the Buick directly into Garcia’s fleeing vehicle. One of Garcia’s ever-present goons lay slumped against the dash, his mirrored sunglasses hanging off his face at a bizarre angle. The spider web fracture on the windshield and open doll eyes told Chase the guy wasn’t going anywhere in the near future. (continue reading…)

Prologue
Dark and broiling, a typical August smothered Riverside, California. David Huynh stood outside the Bang! PC Café, smoking a cigarette. At sixteen, he was too young to have bought them legally. At sixteen, he was too young to be in the café past the ten p.m. city curfew. Neither of those things bothered David much.
All he cared about was the lack of available computers. David wanted to be online, playing soldier and killing other kids playing terrorists. Interactive play was so much better than going against a machine. Usually, he was in place and surfing the net before the major crowd showed up. Tonight he’d worked late at his uncle’s convenience store and it set him behind. He pulled another drag. Sooner or later someone would run out of money and then David could take his spot.
A high-buffed Nissan pulled into the lot. Metallic gold paint along the hood melded into candy orange by the time it reached the aftermarket spoiler. Every window was tinted well past legal limits. A dragon crawled across the top of the windshield, almost undulating in time to low-level base that throbbed from God knew how many speakers. As the car screeched to a standstill, engraved chrome and 24-carat gold rims spun like whirligigs, and multicolored lights chased themselves across the hood. Hydraulics hissed as the Nissan’s body juddered downwards. (continue reading…)

Gray mist undulated around him and Alad hunkered into his greatcoat, cursing the government, the military, the enemy, religion and pretty much anyone else he could blame for stranding him on this rock in the skanky armpit of the far side of the universe. He’d beg for sun, but none existed here, at least not in this season. Perpetual overcast served up with sides of absolute darkness and intermittent twilight haunted his days. He’d be so stoked when he found a ride off this shit-pit.
Alad stepped from slick twisted root to twisted root, a winding, treacherous and living shortcut from one ramshackle walkway to another. Things slithered through the oily water below. Tumbledown bars, whorehouses and low rent lodgings twisted off in dizzying directions, their location due more to where infrequent patches of solid land could be found than actual planning. All of it castoff MDU and MTO prefabs destined for the scrap heap, salvaged and pressed into service to make up the eyesore known as Desperation Alley—the no-man’s land between base and the up-rank civilian settlements. Missing panels patched by biopolymer sheets added off-color dissonance to the grays and muted blue buildings. Shadows flitted behind window openings covered with NatuResin tarps. Here and there, outmoded and damaged shipping containers served as pod barracks: racks of one-bod and two-bod bunks bracketed floor to ceiling for those too drunk or burning to stumble back to base.
