Some things are not always what they appear to be. So Nick Fallon discovers when he is hired to investigate the death of a young man whose body is found buried in a wooded canyon area of Los Angeles. Not that he’s surprised. After ten years in law enforcement, Nick is pretty much used to the unexpected. However, he soon becomes frustrated by the bizarre behavior of his client, John Hammond, and the apparent indiscretion of his business partner, Jeff Stevens.

Nick’s investigation leads him to a gay bar in LA, and from there to the still recovering city of New Orleans where he finds what appear to be the answers to the mystery. But what he has unraveled is only a small part of the truth. What remains is even more terrible—a trap, where the price of pleasure is death.

Along the way, Nick is reminded of the often-high cost of friendship, and that trust and honesty are essential elements in any relationship—be it friend, or lover.

Chapter One

Nick Fallon looked up from the paperwork he was working on when his partner Jeff Stevens strode into the office they shared. He grinned as Jeff flung himself into his chair, glaring moodily across the office at him, his handsome face unusually glum.
“Bad start to the day?” Nick asked.
“You could say that. Don’t ever live with an artist!”
“Oh, oh.” Nick leaned his long frame back in his chair, and waited.
“Now he wants to open a gallery in San Diego,” Jeff growled. “Like the one here in town isn’t enough to keep him busy, night and day.”
“San Diego, that’s not so far.”
“Nick, Peter and I hardly see each other anymore as it is.” Jeff gave his chestnut brown hair an impatient swipe. “What with his schedule and mine, it seems like every hour of every day is filled with stuff that keeps us away from each other. You have it easy. Eric has regular hours at the gallery. He’s at home every night when you get there’s candles lit, cocktails poured, dinner in the oven. Don’t deny it.”
“I’m not denying…”
“But me,” Jeff continued to rant, “I get home to a dark and empty house and maybe, just maybe, there’s a note saying something to the effect that he’s in conference or got a sitting, or…”
“Well, he’s a successful…”
“Or, he’s having dinner with some high-powered business people that want him to design a mural for their fucking office.”
“You should be proud of…”
“And that’s not all. The other night–get this, he told me he might go to Europe for three months!”
“What for?”
“Some school in Paris wants him to coach their more gifted students.”
“But surely that’s quite an honor, Jeff. You should be proud of him, buddy.”
“I am proud of him!” Jeff slumped back in his chair with a heavy sigh. “I’m behaving badly, aren’t I?”
Nick nodded. “Yeah, something like that.”
“Well, don’t be so quick to agree, partner mine. You won’t like it when he asks Eric to manage the gallery in San Diego.”
“He’s going to do that?”
“Of course he is. You know he thinks the world of Eric’s management skills. Never stops telling me what a great choice he made in hiring your sweetie.”
“Well, San Diego’s hardly at the ends of the earth.”
“Yeah, but he’s going to be driving back and forth till they get it up and running,” Jeff told him. “And then,” he added with a degree of triumph, “He won’t be at home ready with your pipe and slippers!”
“I don’t smoke a pipe.” (continue reading)

Chapter One

Laguna Beach. California

The early morning sun, rising in the east behind the hills and canyons that separate the town of Laguna Beach from the rest of Orange County, spilled its light onto the calm waters of the Pacific Ocean, touching the whitecaps with silver as they broke gently on shore. It was early October, but a Santa Ana condition had kicked in the day before, bringing a warm, dry, off-shore wind from the desert that could already be felt, despite the fact it was not yet six a.m.

The runner on the beach churned up the sand as he ran with a long, loping style. Tall, broad shouldered, with lean, hard muscles gleaming under a fine layer of perspiration, he drew admiring glances from the scattering of men and women likewise engaged in their early morning exercise. As he approached Main Beach he stopped, wiped the perspiration from his eyes, then pulling off his tank top, he ran into the ocean before diving headfirst beneath the waves. He swam with strong, sure strokes against the tide, enjoying the coolness of the water, feeling energized by the tugging of the riptide. For a time, he floated on his back on top of the rolling waves, gazing up at the azure sky, his mind turned off to the rigors he knew the day would eventually bring him. This he considered his just reward for getting out of bed at the crack of dawn and running for an hour every day.

The roar of a speedboat’s engine close by shattered the early morning quiet, and he was caught in the undulating wake created by its passing. His reverie interrupted, he flipped himself over, and with a strong kick of his legs, headed back to shore. (continue reading…)

Chapter One

Vinn watched as the waiter filled his glass, the wine as dark and rich as liquid garnets. Or blood, he thought, with a little shiver of excitement.

The waiter turned to Julien. But when he raised the bottle to pour, Vinn’s companion covered his glass with one long elegant hand and shook his head. “Not for me. I’m driving.”

“Very good, sir.” The waiter nodded and retired, giving them back their privacy.

Vinn chuckled. “I’m driving? That’s rich.”

Julien lifted his shoulders in one of those Gallic shrugs that were so Julien. “And what would you have had me say instead? Sorry, my good man, no wine for me. But if you’ve a pint of AB negative on hand, by all means, serve it up.”

“It might have been worth it just to see his face.”

“Hardly.” But Julien smiled and motioned toward Vinn’s glass. “Go on, taste your wine.” (continue reading…)

Chapter One

Life is the ordinary expression of magic, and much of what gets called magic is simply an unexpected expression of life. Before I caught on to that concept, the great adventurers who filled my boyhood reading and dreaming hours were magic-seeking archaeologists. I wanted to be one so badly, I stepped out onto the back stoop on a bitter-cold starry night and offered my soul for the chance.

Aunt Bella rushed out and swung a soup ladle at me, screaming at me to cancel the trade subito! Before some power agreed to it!

I grinned, ducked the arc of dishwater, and skipped out of reach.
Aunt Bella had come to stay with us the week her son and my dad and all their stockbroker buddies jumped out of the top windows of the Empire State Building. She spent her hoarded dimes on the books I begged for, jackanapes that I was. Adoring her did not keep me from trying her temper at frequent intervals. Usually, I got away with it.
Not this time. She chased me down and locked a sudsy hand on my collar. Despite both of us being coatless in the snow, she dragged me to the church on the corner, where she begged red-faced Father Patrick to explain my peril.

“You again, Dickins?” He boxed my ear, not quite hard enough to knock me down.

I dropped anyway, to get the sympathy. No dice. In mid-drop, pinching fingers caught my ear. (continue reading…)

Bewildered by a series of erotic dreams, Michael Ballantyne, a young graphic artist living in Los Angeles is eager to uncover their meaning. When he is informed that he is the sole beneficiary in an unknown man’s will and is now the owner of a large estate in Hertfordshire, England, Michael feels that somehow he has been given a key to unlock the dreams’ mysteries. This feeling grows stronger when he comes face to face with Jonathan Robertson, a handsome Englishman, who more than just resembles the man in his dreams.

Together they attempt to solve the mystery that surrounds the disappearance and apparent murder of Jonathan Harcourt, the son of the previous owner of Bedford Park.

The mutual attraction they quickly feel for one another is hampered by the sudden arrival of Michael’s jealous boyfriend, Steve Miller, and by Jack Trenton, a formidable and uninvited presence who has occupied the lodge by the estate gates.

When Michael, along with his now ex-boyfriend, Steve, is held hostage by Trenton, it becomes clear that Bedford Park holds many more secrets than anyone ever thought. Michael and Jonathan are soon to discover that the keepers of those secrets are dangerous men, willing to stop at nothing in order to make an ancient oath come to pass.

*****************************
For the umpteenth time in twenty minutes, Michael Ballantyne glanced toward the diner entrance to see if his brother Brad had yet deigned to arrive for their lunch date. “Where in hell is he?” he muttered to himself, sucking up half his iced tea in frustration. He caught the waiter’s eye and ordered a burger. No point in waiting any longer—looked like Brad was a no show.He tried to shuck off the feeling of disappointment that his brother hadn’t even bothered to call him to say he couldn’t make it, but just as the waiter took his order, Michael saw a red-faced Brad dash into the diner and scan the crowded room. On seeing Michael wave at him, he hurried over to the booth.

“Shit, sorry,” he said, sliding onto the seat opposite Michael. “Had a client who just wouldn’t get off the phone. What’re you having?”

“Cheeseburger…”

“I’ll have the same,” Brad told the waiter, “and a beer.”

“Drinking at lunch time?”

“I’m taking the afternoon off. I’ve been working way too hard lately.”

Michael chuckled. “Who told you that?”

“I told me that, my boy, and it’s the truth. Five closings in one month, two of ‘em utter bastards—I’m exhausted.” Brad slumped in his seat to emphasize his words. (continue reading…)
